UW School of Medicine founded; includes Department of Preventive Medicine and Public Health. Leland Powers named first Chair

1955

William Reynolds becomes Chair

1960

Thomas Grayston named Professor and Chair of the Department, which he renames Department of Preventive Medicine

1970

Department of Preventive Medicine became the School of Public Health and Community Medicine, provisionally accredited by the American Public Health Association. Thomas Grayston served as first Dean. Original departments and chairs were:
Biostatistics – Edward Perrin
Environmental Health – James McCarroll
Epidemiology and International Health – Russell Alexander
Health Services – Robert Day
Pathobiology (originally called Experimental Laboratories) – George Kenny

MEDEX and Health Services Administration and Planning (MHA degree) programs developed in Health Services

1971

Thomas Grayston named Vice President for Health Affairs of the UW; Donovan Thompson named Acting Dean of the School

1972

Robert Day appointed Dean of the School (December)

1973

SPHCM received full accreditation

Betty Gilson named Acting Chair of Health Services; William Richardson appointed Chair (September)

Undergraduate program in Environmental Health moved from College of Arts and Sciences to SPHCM

The Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholars Program (joint with the School of Medicine) began
