Memorial Funds

Walter Remak (1915-2006) liked to say that South Africa gave him his dignity and his career. As a 21-year-old German Jew, he fled to South Africa in 1936 and fought the Nazis in the South African Army. He loved the country that had taken him in, and in 1995 he established a scholarship for South African students here at the School, asking that they return home to help others with their new skills.

Walter realized a dream when he started the Remak Racing Stable. He was thrilled when his last horse, Turban, raced in the Longacres Mile in 2005—even though he ran "like a raccoon." Walter will be missed by family and friends, including many here at the School.

E. Russell Alexander (1928-2006) was a nationally renowned epidemiologist and founding faculty member of the School. In the course of his career Russ spent 10 years (in four separate tours) at the CDC in various infectious disease prevention roles and 8½ years as chief epidemiologist at Public Health-Seattle & King County. He also spent 18 years at the University of Washington, in both Pediatrics and Preventative Medicine (which subsequently became the SPHCM) and was the founding chair of the School’s Department of Epidemiology.

In 1976, Russ was the sole voice of caution during the swine flu outbreak, “posing very important questions about how to proceed,” according to IOM president Dr. Harvey V. Fineberg. “They turned out to be the right questions,” he adds.

At the families’ request, a memorial fund has been set up to support epidemiology students.
