Message from the Dean

Pat Wahl, Dean of the School of Public Health and Community Medicine

Welcome to the Web site of University of Washington's School of Public Health and Community Medicine, the only accredited school of public health north of Berkeley and west of Minneapolis. Since our founding in 1970, we have become a national leader in public health education and research.

Through our five departments -- Biostatistics, Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences, Epidemiology, Health Services, and Pathobiology -- and our numerous interdepartmental and interschool programs, we offer BS, MHA, MPH, MS, and PhD degrees. We have pioneered many teaching innovations, including courses on clinical trials and drug discovery strategies and our MPH in Community-Oriented Public Health Practice, which integrates classroom instruction and experiential fieldwork to address real community problems. And we are leaders in public health informatics and genomics, two areas identified by the Institute of Medicine's Committee on Educating Public Health Professionals for the 21st Century as critical for preparing students to address the major health problems and challenges facing society.

But academics are just one facet of the School, which is also recognized worldwide for the research conducted through our departments, our more than 30 research centers, and our partnerships with other excellent research organizations. In 2002-2003, our faculty were awarded close to $70 million in research grants on a broad range of topics: infectious diseases; environmental and occupational health hazards; chronic diseases such as cancer and heart disease; health care delivery and services; and development of new biostatistical methodologies. Seven of our researchers were recently honored by the Institute for Scientific Information for being among the 228 most influential and highly-cited researchers in the world. And we moved up a notch in the 2003 US News and World Report rankings of schools of public health to 4th in the nation and 2nd among public universities.

At the School, 200 faculty, 750 students, and hundreds of research and support staff help people and communities live healthier, safer lives. We invite you to read about the School here on our Web site and to contact us for additional information.
